In the German city of Gelsenkirchen, a gang carried out a spectacular robbery at the Sparkasse savings bank. The criminals managed to open 3,200 safety deposit boxes – about 95 percent of the total – affecting more than 2,500 customers.
Police initially estimated the stolen cash, jewelry, and valuables at €30 million, but German media suggested the figure could reach €90 million or more.
The incident sparked outrage among customers, who gathered outside the bank in protest, demanding answers on how such a massive theft could occur unnoticed. Investigators believe the operation may have taken several days, taking advantage of the Christmas holiday.
