Germany Debates Raising Retirement Age Beyond 67 Amid Aging Population

Publication date: 2025-12-29

Germany’s pension system is under severe strain due to an aging population. Economy Minister Katherina Reiche has called for raising the retirement age beyond 67, stating: “We need to work more and longer.”

Currently, the law stipulates a gradual increase to 67 by 2031. However, economists warn this will not be enough, as two-thirds of the Labor Ministry’s budget in 2025 is already being used to support the pension system.

While experts argue that extending working life is necessary to ensure sustainability, unions and left-wing parties strongly oppose the idea, saying it would unfairly burden workers in physically demanding jobs.
