German companies report rising demand for fireworks ahead of New Year’s Eve, but medical authorities are sounding the alarm. Klaus Reinhardt, president of the German Medical Association, has urged a ban on private fireworks.
Speaking to the RND network, Reinhardt warned that uncontrolled fireworks cause serious injuries every year, including hearing damage among children and teenagers, eye injuries, and burns. Emergency rooms are often overwhelmed, costing the health system millions.
He stressed that organized fireworks displays in public squares should remain allowed, but random private use must be prohibited to protect citizens.
