Public Anger in Germany Over New Minimum Wage

Publication date: 2025-12-24

Germany’s decision to raise the minimum wage to €13.90 per hour starting January 2026 has sparked widespread criticism.

Many citizens argue it is insufficient to cope with rising living costs and inflation.

A YouGov poll commissioned by the German Press Agency found that 40% of Germans consider the new rate too low.

Meanwhile, 25% see it as adequate, and 17% believe it is too high.

The minimum wage will rise again to €14.60 in January 2027.

Tax-free “Minijobs” will also increase from €538 to €603 per month.

Trade unions welcomed the increase but stressed it remains below what is needed for a decent standard of living.

The government described the measure as a difficult compromise between unions and employers.
