Publication date: 2025-12-22

Berlin’s streets traditionally turn into lively celebration venues on New Year’s Eve. Authorities are preparing for potential unrest with a strict security plan to ensure safety.

Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) announced on Sunday (December 21, 2025) that police will act firmly against rioters. “Anyone committing riots or crimes will feel the full force of the rule of law,” Wegner said. “We want everyone to celebrate happily, but if crimes occur, police will intervene decisively.”

Berlin police have been preparing for months and will be highly visible across the city. Wegner emphasized: “We will do everything necessary to make this night peaceful and joyful. A large number of officers will ensure that no one exploits the night for riots or serious crimes.”

He stressed that throwing illegal fireworks into crowds or at police and emergency teams constitutes a crime.
