Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, urged stronger efforts to combat antisemitism, criticizing that political measures “often focus only on protecting Jewish life.” He called for a “new uprising of the moral-minded.”
Schuster referred to the initiative by former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and then Council President Paul Spiegel after the 2000 Düsseldorf synagogue attack, when demonstrations and human chains were organized. He lamented that today “either the number of moral-minded people has declined significantly, or they remain passive.”
He stressed that Jewish life in Germany should not exist only under heavy protection, but that politics and civil society must address the root causes of antisemitism.
