A new poll shows that most Germans support Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s push to use frozen Russian assets within the European Union to benefit Ukraine. According to a survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency, 58% of respondents backed the idea, while 23% opposed it and 19% expressed no opinion.
Among voters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), a clear majority of 57% rejected the use of these assets, which are worth hundreds of billions, to support Ukraine.
EU leaders are meeting today, Thursday (December 18, 2025), in Brussels for a highly anticipated summit to decide on this contentious issue. Merz is among the strongest advocates, while Belgium, which holds the largest share of these assets in its banks, has raised significant legal and political concerns.
