The European Commission has unveiled plans to roll back its earlier decision to ban new combustion-engine cars from 2035. The revised proposal, which still requires approval from EU governments and the European Parliament, would allow continued sales of certain non-electric vehicles, including hybrids.
This move marks the bloc’s most significant retreat from its climate policies in recent years. Germany and Italy played a central role in pushing for the change, with their carmakers warning of losing competitiveness against Tesla and Chinese manufacturers. Automakers insisted on keeping hybrid and fuel-based options alongside electric vehicles.
