Alice Weidel, leader of the Alternative for Germany party, launched a fierce attack on Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, comparing its staff to Stasi spies. Her remarks provoked strong criticism from the German Police Union, which defended the agency and its employees, calling the comments an attempt to undermine its work and intimidate its staff.
In an interview with the newspaper Welt, Weidel described intelligence officers as “dirty Stasi spies” and directed sharp criticism at Stephan Kramer, head of the Thuringia branch of the agency, mocking his appearance and his membership in a motorcycle club.
The Police Union said in a statement that such comparisons are an “insult” and “belittle the injustices of that era,” adding that they are “a slap in the face to those who fought for freedom and democracy in 1989.”
