Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement is nearing completion.
He revealed that he will meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the end of the month to discuss the next stage, expressing his belief that “peace with the Palestinians” is possible.
Netanyahu made the remarks during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is visiting Israel.
He added that the second phase of the agreement, which came into effect on October 10, is approaching. He explained that this stage is “more difficult than the first” and involves disarming Gaza and Hamas.
Netanyahu stressed that his upcoming talks with Trump will be crucial in ensuring the implementation of the second phase.
Israeli newspapers reported that Trump is exerting significant pressure on Tel Aviv to move forward with the second phase, amid expectations that Washington will announce the formation of a “Peace Council” in mid-December to temporarily oversee Gaza’s administration, stabilize the agreement, and lead reconstruction efforts.
