Genetic Mutation Linked to Mental Illnesses

A team of researchers in Germany has identified a specific genetic mutation responsible for certain mental illnesses, paving the way for new approaches to early treatment.

Scientists at the Institute of Genetic Research at Leipzig University found that changes in the GRIN2A gene may directly cause conditions such as schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety-related disorders.

The World Health Organization reported in 2021 that one in seven people worldwide suffers from a mental illness, with anxiety and depression being the most common. Genetic factors are among the key causes.

The study, published in Molecular Psychiatry, examined 121 individuals with mutations in the GRIN2A gene. Lead researcher Jonas Lemke stated: “Our findings indicate that GRIN2A is the first known gene capable of directly triggering mental illness.”

He added that these mutations are linked not only to schizophrenia but also to other disorders that can appear early in life, such as during childhood or adolescence.

Researchers also noted associations with epilepsy and certain cognitive impairments.
