Following multiple drone sightings over European airports last autumn, Germany’s federal police in Arensfelde officially launched a new drone interception unit on Tuesday (December 2, 2025). The initiative is part of a national strategy accelerated after the temporary closures of Munich and Copenhagen airports last year. The new unit is designed to detect and intercept drones more quickly using advanced technology. During the launch ceremony, the unit presented its initial operational procedures in the presence of Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. A joint federal-state drone interception center is also scheduled to open in December, with the Interior Ministers’ Conference currently discussing its location. Meanwhile, the federal government is working on legislative amendments that would grant the federal police, and in exceptional cases the German armed forces, expanded powers to intercept drones.
