Paris-Berlin dispute threatens joint European air combat system

Publication date: 2025-11-30

The Franco-German parliamentary assembly is urging the governments in Berlin and Paris to ensure the success of the joint Future Combat Air System (FCAS), despite major obstacles. A draft resolution for a meeting scheduled in Berlin on Monday, December 1, 2025, states: “We Europeans must increasingly design, develop and procure weapons systems together in the future.” The German government announced it will decide by the end of the year on the project, which has long been hampered by industrial policy disputes with France. Germany expects the French side, represented by Dassault, to adhere to existing agreements that stipulate equal participation by Dassault, Airbus Germany, and Spain’s Indra. Reports suggest Dassault is seeking 80 percent control of the project, a demand rejected by Germany. The FCAS is planned to be operational by 2040, replacing Eurofighter jets. It will integrate both armed and unarmed drones, making it far more than just a fighter aircraft program.
