German Chancellor Merz Faces Pressure Ahead of Israel Visit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is preparing for an official visit to Israel on December 6–7, 2025. He is expected to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial. The trip has drawn criticism from German and EU lawmakers, particularly because Netanyahu is under an ICC arrest warrant. Green and SPD representatives insist Merz should also engage with Palestinian authorities and condemn settler violence in the West Bank. Germany recently lifted a partial ban on arms exports to Israel after a ceasefire in Gaza, but tensions remain high.
