Germany to Deploy “Arrow 3” Missile Defense as Poll Shows Public Rejects Military Leadership Role

Publication date: 2025-11-26

Germany is preparing to deploy the Israeli-made “Arrow 3” missile defense system to strengthen its protection against ballistic threats. Initial operational readiness is scheduled for December 3, 2025, at the Holzdorf Air Base near Berlin, with full deployment expected by 2030. Developed jointly by Israel and the United States, the system enables Germany to detect and intercept ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere. It is seen as part of Berlin’s strategy to counter Russian threats and fill a major gap in air defense. Meanwhile, a recent Körber survey conducted by Forsa revealed that 61% of Germans oppose their country taking a leading military role in Europe, while only 38% support it. Opposition was stronger in eastern Germany (75%) compared to western regions (58%). The poll, conducted among 1,503 citizens between September 15 and 26, 2025, highlights the contrast between government defense ambitions and public reluctance toward military leadership.
