Epilepsy is among the most common chronic neurological disorders. But what is it, and how do seizures occur? German neurologist Uwe Meyer explained that epilepsy is a group of neurological conditions caused by disrupted electrical signals in brain cells, characterized by recurring seizures. As the head of the German Professional Association of Neurologists, Meyer noted that during a seizure the brain—or specific regions of it—enters a state of excessive activity. Large numbers of neurons discharge their electrical impulses simultaneously, leading to severe convulsions, loss of consciousness, and major cognitive disturbances.
