A new report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reveals that antibiotic use across EU countries remains at alarmingly high levels. Overuse of these medicines is a major driver of bacterial resistance. Data from 2024 show that consumption rates in several member states are still well above recommended thresholds. Experts warn that this trend could lead to more infections caused by resistant bacteria. In 2020 alone, more than 35,000 deaths in the EU were attributed to antibiotic-resistant infections. The ECDC urges more prudent use of antibiotics, stronger public awareness campaigns, and tighter controls within healthcare systems.
