German Foreign Minister Johann Vadehvul has defended his controversial comments on Syria, insisting that the immediate return of refugees to destroyed areas near Damascus is “extremely limited.” Speaking at the Süddeutsche Zeitung economic summit, he said: “This is the lower bound of truth – my realistic analysis.” Vadehvul sparked debate in late October after visiting devastated suburbs of Damascus, where he doubted the possibility of large-scale voluntary refugee returns in the near future. His remarks drew criticism within his own CSU party, seen by some as undermining repatriation plans. He later compared Syria’s situation to Germany in 1945, claiming some areas were “even worse.” The minister stressed Germany will continue deporting criminals and security threats to Syria, while praising many Syrians who have successfully integrated. He called for international support for reconstruction and urged Syrians to actively participate in rebuilding their country.
