Germany puts five men on trial for war crimes in Syria

On Wednesday, the Higher Regional Court in Koblenz opened the trial of five men accused of murder, crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed in Syria. According to the German news agency, the defendants are stateless Palestinian Syrians aged between 42 and 56. They allegedly served in pro-Assad militias and the Syrian military intelligence between 2012 and 2014. The charges include killing at least six people, among them a 14-year-old boy, during the suppression of a protest on July 13, 2012. The five suspects were arrested on July 3 last year and have remained in pre-trial detention since then.
