In Germany’s Saxony state, municipal workers uncovered several gold bars wrapped in plastic while mowing grass at a rainwater basin near Bannewitz, southwest of Dresden. The incident occurred on October 17. Police launched an investigation to determine whether the gold is linked to a crime. Police spokesman Marco Laske told Bild that there is currently no evidence of a specific offense, but inquiries continue. The gold is valued at around €30,000. Bannewitz mayor Heiko Vierzig (43) stated that if ownership of the bars is transferred to the municipality, the funds will be used to support a program encouraging local associations.
