German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed gratitude to Italian migrants for their contribution to Germany’s economic rise after the war. Speaking at a joint event with Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Berlin on Saturday (November 15, 2025), Steinmeier highlighted the vital role of the so-called “guest workers.” He stressed that Germany owes them thanks and respect, noting that they often faced prejudice and rejection. Steinmeier added that it took a long time for the country to fully recognize the immense life achievements of those who came to Germany at that time. He concluded by emphasizing that Germany’s post-World War II success story also has a migrant background.
